AMC’s First Sci-Fi Anthology to Focus on Love and Technology
AMC announced Thursday that it has ordered six episodes of an untitled anthology drama about the intersections of love and science, set 15 years in the future.
The series revolves around a discovery that changes the lives of everyone on the planet – a way to find your soul mate. Focusing on the cost of finding true love, the project seems likely to dig into the implications of dating in the age of screenlife.
Emmy-winning Black Mirror writer Will Bridges (season 4’s standout “USS Callister” episode) created the series with Brett Goldstein (Superbob), using their short film “For Life” as a basis for the anthology.
“The show explores how technological innovation can impact the most delicate matters of the heart, and each episode will turn personal life choices into high-stakes drama,” said David Madden, AMC’s president of programming. “It’s a fresh yet relatable idea, portrayed through wildly entertaining tales with unexpected twists, humor, and meaningful emotion.”
Technological innovations like the one at the heart of this project have changed how we fall in love. From connecting with old flames over Facebook to charting new romantic horizons with apps like Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble, dating in the modern age looks drastically different than it used to.
Hollywood’s caught wise to this, crafting an increasing number of screen-savvy romances that range from strange (Spike Jonze’s Her) to scary (Bad Match) to spine-tingling (Alex Garland’s Ex Machina). All have in some way navigated the same concepts at the heart of screenlife, discussing how being connected across continents on our computer and laptop screens has transformed every facet of our lives. It seems likely that Bridges and Goldstein’s anthology series will take pointers from Black Mirror and other such speculative sci-fi series, contributing another intriguing entry in a growing realm of screenlife-related endeavors.
